Jo Angilee, also known as Sprout, is a born & raised Bay Area (Ohlone territory), CA photographer. They predominantly work with 35mm & 120mm film, as well as digital, with a focus in realism portraiture. The origin of their work is centered around the preservation of the vulnerable metamorphose that is embodied trans & queer experience. They seek to amplify the importance of archival documentation that accentuates the interplay of what it means to be in constant transition amongst landscape that reflects a similar quality. Whether working with manmade structural dynamics or natural settings they help to hold space for the immersive importance of engagement between those they photograph and where these bodies inhabit space. This supports their overall hope that those whom become vulnerable in front of their lens feel held and in relationship to all parts of what may be alive – within & around.
Predominantly self taught, Jo seeks mentorship from community as a way of building upon what has come before. They are currently working on a years long archival project of trans folks with a specific focus on transmasculine people pre & post op. As a part of their archival process, all completed projects have been updated on this website. From people, projects, events, and environment welcome to the viewership lens from Jo’s perspective.
